You won’t get everything that needs to be done finished today. Many people can’t accept the reality that there is more work to be done than they will be able to finish.
One key to success is to be able to identify what needs to be done by the end of the day — today. When you look at your pile of work in the morning, how can you possibly tell what you must finish today, and what won’t hurt you if it is left unfinished at the end of the day?
Here is a filter that you can use to choose your work that must be done by the end of the day:
- What will become the most pressing task tomorrow if you don’t do it today? – Choose this first.
- What will create the greatest impact on a project that is due a week or further in the future? – Making a future impact is your second task.
- What tasks need to be completed today because they weren’t completed yesterday, or they suddenly came up? – Here is number three on your list.
When you identify the work that you are doing today, you might get everything done on today’s list. When this happens, reapply your filter. Decide from your shortened list what needs to be done by the end of the day.
There will still be work left on your list, but the most important work will be done by the end of the day.
