Only Deliver. Stop Building Everything.

You need to get out of the mindset that you need to build it yourself.

We live in a world today where most of what you need to get done is already being done by someone else. And it’s being done as a commodity. If you need software, you can get software-as-a-commodity (often referred to as software-as-a-service.) There are many flavours of what you need out there. If you need any work done, from coding to graphic design, you can hire someone to freelance a specific piece for you.¬†You don’t need to produce everything. What you need to do is organize the work so that the result makes a change in the world.

It might sound that producing a piece of software, or doing freelance work is the wrong business for you. I am saying the opposite. If you are creating something unique that will change the world, do it. What I am telling you is to drill down to working on the things that you are uniquely gifted to do. Don’t build the parts that other people are uniquely talented to do. You won’t do it as well as they will, and it will frustrate you because it is outside of your passion. Worst of all, you will rob someone else of the chance to hit a home-run because you are keeping the work that they can excel at to yourself.

Your job is to see the big picture. Understand how what you want to produce will change the world. Then organize all of the pieces so that the world is different when you finish. Don’t do everything yourself. Your job is to deliver the change. You don’t have to build the whole change yourself. Let other people have a part in the shift. They will thank you for the chance, and we will all be better because of it.
