Today we are looking at the final ITIL 4 Guiding Principle: “Optimize and Automate.”
Optimization is delivering the absolute best and most efficient result possible. Everyone wants to know that their product is optimized. Most people are drawn towards providing a perfect, extremely efficient outcome. The problem is that our desire to deliver an efficient result leads us to premature optimization. Premature optimization is when you work to optimize something that you don’t even know is important to the customer. Your Minimum Viable Product (MVP) can help you learn what is important to your customers and stakeholders. Optimize to what your stakeholders want. Don’t waste all your time on what you can make most efficient, deliver value into the hands of those people who are waiting for it.
