What’s In a Name?

Announcing Our New Logo

FortyFour-Three has a new logo!

With the unveiling of the new logo, I think that it’s time to explain the origin of the name FortyFour-Three. First a couple of stories.

Story 1: I asked a seasoned business owner for advice a couple of years back. At some point in our conversation, I asked him what he thought about the name that I had chosen for my business: FortyFour-Three. His response was simply: “You’re not naming a boat; your business name has to have some meaning that people get.”

Story 2: When I was registering for a mailbox one day the clerk saw the name of the business and was intrigued. He wanted to know what the company did. He said, “It sounds mysterious, kind of like a James Bond, double-oh-seven thing.” To this day when I go into the post office (which is about once every six months. He remembers the business name.

Story 3: When my wife first saw how I had registered the business name she pointed out that most people write FortyFour as Forty-Four.

The point? Everyone has an opinion. Everyone has a thought. No one said walked away with the reaction of, ‘That sounds fine.’ FortyFour-Three is at least a name that makes you stop and think for a moment. Even if at that moment you are trying to figure out what the name is supposed to be.

Why FortyFour-Three?

I started with the name FortyFour-Three because that is the last three numbers in my phone number. Then like any rational [whole other discussion for another day] person, I used that number to connect to other artifacts that are important to me. One connection that I made was to a passage from the Old Testament that resonated with me.

Isaiah 44:3 says:
For I will pour water on the thirsty land,
and streams on the dry ground;
I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring,
and my blessing on your descendants.

The verse can be kind of abstract if you aren’t currently in a routine or community that is unravelling the Old or New Testaments. Essentially the text is acknowledging that God (Yahweh) will bring new growth to dry land and current and future generations will benefit from it.

I want to be in a place where I can be used by God to help people overcome the dry ground and obstacles that they are facing. I want to see people grow and flourish as they are doing what they are gifted to do. I want to help people, and I want God to continue to be with my family and future generations so that they can do the same.

As I write this, I recognize how my reasons and words may sound to some of you. You may be asking, “What does all of this God talk have to do with project management and being successful? Does being a Christian give you an edge on getting things done on time?” I would say that it does, but that is a story for another day.

The reason I share about the name of FortyFour-Three, and even some of my religious experience, is because I want to share my journey with you in its entirety. I hope that we can have a conversation if you have thoughts or questions or concerns.

The Naming Story In A Sentance

And so, in short, the name FortyFour-Three came initially from my phone number and eventually found meaning as a pointer to a passage in scripture. I hope you enjoy the logo and knowing a little more about the name.
